Steve Lackey

Steve Lackey focuses his practice on Estate Planning, Administration of Decedents' Estates and Guardianship. With more than 26 years experience, Steve takes pride in developing wills and trusts that are personal and unique to each of his clients, ranging from simple wills to custom trusts addressing special situations. For both planning and estate administrations, Steve is adept at helping clients to identify their goals, evaluate their options and arrive at a solution meeting those goals.

Lackey is a member of the Estate Planning and Fiduciary Law and Elder Law sections of the North Carolina Bar Association.

Lackey is versed in matters related to elder law, powers of attorney, health care directives, estate and gift taxation, will contests, real property partitions and trust modifications. He serves as Attorney Guardian ad Litem for indigent clients in guardianship proceedings and as a volunteer attorney for Legal Aid of North Carolina.

Lackey graduated from the University of North Carolina School of Law in May of 1996 and was admitted to the North Carolina Bar in August of that year. His law school studies focused on Trusts and Estates, Property Law and Estate and Gift tax. He began his legal career with Epting & Hackney immediately after.

Prior to attending law school, Steve received a Master of Arts degree in Early Child Education from the University of Texas at Austin (Spring 1985) and was a pre-school teacher, first in Austin and then in Chapel Hill. Being a Tar Heel born and bred (Charlotte), Steve matriculated at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and earned a Bachelor’s degree with a major in Psychology in 1980.

Lackey is active in our community, with an emphasis on matters related to aging. He serves as a member of the Audit Committee for Carol Woods Retirement Center, and has served as a member and chair of the Orange County Advisory Board on Aging, the Friends of the Robert and Pearl Seymour Center (Vice President/President), the Orange County United Way Resource Management Team, the Chapel Hill-Carrboro Public School Foundation, the United Way Senior Issues Team (chair) and as a child advocate in the Guardian ad litem program.
